Reading in the 2nd Grade!
In our second grade class, the students begin reading for meaning, not just as a way of sounding out simple sentences. I give my students many opportunities to read, whether it's silent reading, reading aloud in groups, with a partner or reading to the teacher. We do a lot of rereading stories to increase their fluency, or their ability to read quickly and accurately.
In the second grade the students will recognize the sequence of events in a story. They will be able to retell familiar stories, summarize the main ideas and plot in a story.
Our main reading resource is Avenues our reading book. We've read two reading selections so far from Avenues. Unit 1 is about Neighborhoods, which ties into Social Studies. The students read a collection of poems in the first reading selection title, "A Movie in my Pillow." The other reading selection is "Chinatown," a story about a boy and his neighborhood in Chinatown, New York City.
In Unit 2, of our Avenues reading book, the students learned about foods and different kinds of farms. We reviewed nouns, verbs, and adjectives that tied into the Unit.
Unit 3 - Water, Water, Everywhere, is all about water, clouds, weather, puddles! We started Unit 3 on January 14, 2013. We read a book about rain. The students learned about the five senses, and how we use those senses when it rains. We may feel the rain, taste the rain, smell the rain, hear the rain, and see the rain!
Reading Goals!
This school year we have started the Book it program! Each month the students will have to reach the reading goal I set for the month. November's reading goal is 75 minutes! If they reach the goal they will receive a reading certificate that allows them to get a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut!!
December's Reading goal is 50 minutes!
January's Reading goal is 60 minutes!
